Fit By 50 / wk 2

Chief pic5

First off, big THANK YOU for the awesome response to last week’s inaugural posting of Fit by 50. People shared tips, victories, challenges, well wishes, but unfortunately–no one said – “No way, you look 35.”

Well, maybe that one message just didn’t make it’s way to my inbox, so thanks to whoever you were.

Week 2 is in the books, and I gotta say it was fantastic. Ever heard of a George Foreman grill? Where have I been the last 25 years? In a restaurant!!

Although cycling is my favorite sport for exercise, the out-of-school grind for finding kiddo care eliminates that possibility almost entirely. Those rare free moments on the road involve quick 20 -25 mile sprints, and are time well spent with friends and members of the Bayou Country Cyclists.

I’ve committed to trying crossfit at Momentum Gym, and made it nearly each day since they opened two weeks ago. Guess what? They have kid care on site. AMEN.

I’m not going to get all CrossFit Games and WOD on ya, but I gotta tell you there’s nothing like suffering with company. Misery really does love it.

My background is athletics, and the coaching staff (Katherine, Lauren and Alex) leading each session has been a great change of pace compared to biking or swimming with only your thoughts to motivate you.

The magical scale:

This morning I stepped on it with all the confidence and exhaled air I could muster and remain conscious. I don’t know why we do that, as if air weighs pounds inside your lungs.

Anyway – press to activate scale, step on it, get weight, say “Oh crap.”

– step off scale, step to activate, step on, I’ve lost 2 pounds.

Now I’ve got a decision to make – either keep stepping off and on the scale until it registers a weight I like, or buy a new scale.

Goals:

1. Maintain sensible diet

2. Exercise at least 4 times next week

3. Buy new scale but not obsess over readings.

4. Encourage you to join me and share experience and commitments.

5. Be positive about the quest for fitness. Why do we mumble when we discuss health and fitness?

6. Don’t skin shins during box jumps (Okay, so I threw in a WOD term)

Thank you,

Scott

PS: Pic up top is why I’m posting the progress. Thankful for gifts from wonderful people, but Oh my goodness them cupcakes were delicious.

  1. If only stress burned calories we’d be set, right? I’m still trying to talk myself into morning walks with the dog and a return to weight-bearing exercise, so at least you can say you’re more fit than this 23 year-old right now.

Start telling people you really like sugar-free cupcakes lol.

    • Great idea Amber.
I’ve learned that motivation ends with the alarm clocks buzzer for 5:00 am. Dedication continues as you roll your butt out of bed and into the running shoes placed just off the edge.

I hear your dog barking to go for a stroll.

  2. Fifty is a great age…mentally 😉 My body continually reminds me I’m not in my 30s or 40s anymore and it sucks. Inspired to see this blog. I’m going to follow it and check back regularly to help stay motivated since I just started my own regimen. Walking 2 miles at least twice a week and 30 minutes of exercise (elliptical) the other days. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    • Thanks Hildie.
I spent my 40s in the best shape of my life – although I hit a skid in my first year as Chief of Police which also happened to be be my last year of grad school. One year, 45 lbs, a PhD and high blood pressure later – and I began to reclaim my health.

I want to blast through the half-century barrier with that same health and continue to serve as a role model for my peers and community. I just gotta say no to the cupcakes.

      Thanks,
      Scott

  3. Ha! Someone got caught with their hands in the cookie jar! What a cute pic! 🙂 People have so many challenges; I had forgotten about the challenge of the single parent during summer when school is out. My challenge is a medical problem I’m trying to exercise around. It’s a good thing there are so many options out there; it’s decidedly NOT one size fits all! And be careful about the scale. I discovered, to my horror, that my scale shows me weighing ten pounds less than I do, so it’s even worse than I thought!

    • NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL – is the truth. I don’t usually worry about the scale, except I’m a nerd about quantifying everything. I like to track then average and then analyze past results. I know its nuts, but i’m a competitive guy.
Although I know its goofy, I still exhale as hard as i can before stepping on the scale!!!!

      • Haha! Exhaling on the scale is where science nerd meets superstition! Measuring your progress is a great motivator if you’re doing well, and frustrating and demoralizing when you’re not. I’m not a competitive person, so I mostly care how healthy I feel. I did similar to you; I was at my best in my 20’s because of my strenuous job, quit that job and went to school, and gained 55 pounds in 5 weeks. Had no idea I had worked off that many calories! It took years to make it go away, and never got rid of all of it. I also learned that my appetite drops much slower than my activity level does. Dang it!

  4. Well, Scott, the measurement nerd won, and I stepped on a scale today. Despite my ….erm….underachiever approach to the gym, I’ve lost 18 pounds, so that’s definitely a good thing! Now I get the motivation of success instead of the demoralizing fail! 🙂

  5. Love seeing the positive attitude!! Age is just a number, and who cares about that number anyway lol??
