“It’s lonely at the top.”
As Police Chief, I learned how true this is. I was surrounded by officers, staff, and the public, yet never had I felt more alone in my entire life. I couldn’t open up to others or risk confidentiality, innovation, operations or changes in personnel matters.
The truth is, everyone wants your confidence without the consequences of betraying it.
King David said:
“Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”
~ Psalm 41:9
Beyond increased work performance, an accountability partner serves as your trusted confidant for sharing personal challenges or problems without posing a threat to your career or private life.
I retired as a police chief after a decorated 25-year career in the confidential nature of special operations, and executive administration. In addition to my doctoral education, I minister to men’s groups where accountability, confidentiality and truth are cornerstones in my service to others.
I know the burden of responsibility, and the darkness of isolation that limits your personal joy, and the fruits of your professional labor.
“Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days.”
~ Proverbs 19:20
