And closure comes in life’s transitions…

I chose to retire on August 28th because it had held such a devastating association over those previous 10 years. That was the day Hurricane Katrina smashed into my beloved south Louisiana.

It also launched an unprecedented response from first responders that left an indelible impression.

What I thought would be a triumphant departure into retirement, morphed into a solid year of transition and difficulty moving into the civilian side of life.   

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

~ Jeremiah 29:11

Each of the last 3 years, I’d reflect over my career and question whether I could have given more, pushed longer, tried harder. Today, it never crossed my mind until this memory post popped up. And to be honest – I am glad.

Instead of tethering my life to the time passed since leaving one career, I’ve transitioned into a freedom of looking to the opportunities of my future. It’s always better looking through the windshield than the rearview.

So I’m going to leave the demons of Katrina where they belong – in the past, and be thankful for coming out of a tough job with an ability to heal, and God’s blessing of a wonderful wife and family.
