ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

Genesis 39:1-6 (Amplified Bible)

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he [even though a slave] became a successful and prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. So, Joseph pleased Potiphar and found favor in his sight and he served him as his personal servant. He made Joseph overseer over his house, and he put all that he owned in Joseph’s charge.

It happened that from the time that he made Joseph overseer in his house and [put him in charge] over all that he owned, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph; so, the Lord’s blessing was on everything that Potiphar owned, in the house and in the field. So, Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with Joseph there he did not [need to] pay attention to anything except the food he ate.

What is Stewardship:

Managing all God’s resources for the glory of God, acknowledging God as provider.

Starting Block of Stewardship:

–           God created everything.

–           Everything belongs to God.

–           God allows us to exercise dominion over everything He created.

“…have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

QUESTION – Was Joseph’s calling to steward a pagan nation’s resources, being faithful to God?

Genesis 39:1-6 (Amplified Bible)

39 (1) Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt;

NOTE: Sold against his will

–           His circumstances started – failed to steward spiritual gift of prophetic dreams & relationships – lacked maturity, character, and honoring others.

TAKE A STEP BACK: Failed Legacy of Generational Stewarding – Birth order & Honor corrupted.

–           Great-Grandfather Abraham’s affair with Hagar – firstborn Ishmael passed over for Isaac.

–           Grandfather Isaac tricked by Jacob for first born blessings over brother Esau.

–           Father Jacob loved youngest son, Joseph more than other 11 boys.

–           Son Joseph flaunted coat of many colors as a traditional sign of first born.

…and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

NOTE: Consequences of not stewarding:

–           What’s Abraham got to do with this?

–           Abraham failed steward his marriage, monogamy with Sarah, and God’s promise THEY have son – affair with Hagar – son – Ishmael.

–           Ishmael – father of the Muslim nation.

–           Ishmaelites sold Joseph (Jew) are descendants of Ishmael (Muslim).

–           Abraham’s failure to Steward – 2 brothers different mothers to fight that continues thousands of years later as nations war!

–           BREAK GENERATIONAL SIN PATTERNS – SOUL TIES

(2) The Lord was with Joseph, and he [even though a slave] became a successful and prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. (3) Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. (4) So Joseph pleased Potiphar and found favor in his sight and he served him as his personal servant. He made Joseph overseer over his house, and he put all that he owned in Joseph’s charge.

NOTE: Joseph separated from family – God was with him.

–           If God is all you have, then you have all you need!

–           No matter position in life (SERVANT), keep posture of stewarding

–           Giving God Glory allowed Favor to pour out.

5 It happened that from the time that he made Joseph overseer in his house and [put him in charge] over all that he owned, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house because of Joseph; so the Lord’s blessing was on everything that Potiphar owned, in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with Joseph there he did not [need to] pay attention to anything except the food he ate.

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 (Amplified Bible)
