Jesus Needed His Space. So Do We

Jesus Needed His Space. So Do We

The middle of September found me busier than the last six months, but just as I was about to dive deep into doing something for everyone else, I stopped and simply walked away. Does that make me selfish?

You Did What?

Okay, in honesty I didn’t neglect Leah or the kids, but I did have big ministry plans for developing a new discipleship series along with other ideas that had been on my mind. Notice I said on my mind and not on my heart. There’s an important distinction to be made for prioritizing life. Jesus did it and so should you!

It’s important to understand that you can and should “walk away” at certain times. Jesus illustrated that much of His ministry was centered on silence and solitude. He regularly withdrew from others, the daily demands of life, and the pressures of his ministry to be alone with the Father and pray.

Check Out A Few Examples

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35) [Everyone was looking for Jesus, but after his time in prayer he told his disciples that it was time for them to move on to another village.]

“[Despite Jesus’ plea that his miracles be kept secret] the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”

(Luke 5:15-16)

“Once again Jesus went out beside the lake.”

(Mark 2:13)

When Should You Walk Away?

I understand that when life gets so bogged down that we often feel the desire to flee from those pressures. Avoiding is not winning and it’s vital to make sure we aren’t skirting our responsibilities or trying to escape the consequences for bad decisions.

You should practice spending time in silence and solitude just as Jesus did. He used that time to pray, renew Himself and restore His ministry energy. You’re no good to anyone else unless you’re first good to yourself. You can create the time to be alone with God by getting up earlier, staying up later, taking lunches alone, and coordinating family duties with your spouse that allows you both the time to enjoy uninterrupted presence in prayer and meditation.

Join Me?

Well, don’t actually join me are neither of us would be investing in the silence and solitude that brings us closer to the Father. But, make a commitment today to create that space in your life for leaving everything behind except your relationship with Christ.

Will you walk away this week? Tell me how you accomplished this!
